Wipro pledges its commitment to Ecological Sustainability

Launches Eco Eye, a corporation wide initiative

Wipro launched Eco Eye a corporation wide initiative on ecological sustainability. Eco Eye is Wipro’s comprehensive program that drives increasing ecological sustainability in all its operations, as also areas of its influence. The initiative attempts to engage with increasing levels of intensity with all stakeholders – Wipro’s own employees, partners, suppliers, customers and immediate communities.

Mr. Azim Premji, Chairman, Wipro Limited, says, “We firmly believe business cannot be built at the cost of ecology. It is not sustainable. Ecological Sustainability will increasingly be the defining force for society and business globally. Wipro believes Ecological Sustainability this is the right thing to do – in fact is the only way forward.”

Wipro will work on the dimensions of carbon neutrality, water balance, waste management and bio-diversity. “Eco Eye is the “eye” through which we attempt to see everything, and act for ecological sustainability,” said, Mr. Premji.

Wipro has developed a framework for Ecological Sustainability that has five themes and seven goals identified for implementation. The Five themes include being an ecological surplus organization, larger sustainability initiatives beyond Wipro, profitable investments, transparent reporting, risk planning & mitigation.

The Company aims to become carbon neutral, water positive organization, achieve defined level of biodiversity footprint, set new standards in recycling waste and facilitate employees achieve a higher ecological footprint in their personal lives. It also aims to achieve transparency in sustainability reporting and incorporate the expected effects of climate change and other areas of environmental degradation into Wipro’s risk strategy

Wipro has taken up several initiatives in Ecological Sustainability. Some of the initiatives adopted to make its internal operations green has resulted in 13% reduction in average electricity consumption in 2007-08 over 2001-02 (from 338 Kwh per person to 294 Kwh per person) and meet 52% of its water requirement with recycled water. Its campus at Gurgaon and Kochi are rated Platinum and Gold rated green buildings respectively by LEED. Its operations are ISO 14001 certified.

On the customer front, Wipro is at the forefront to build green data centres, launch Greenware PCs, India’s first eco-friendly PC range, Eco-friendly Product Engineering Designs, E-Waste disposal Service and Water treatment solutions.

As part of its engagement with the Community, Wipro has undertaken mass tree plantation drive in Bangalore, Kochi, Delhi and Chennai. Its tree plantation in Tsunami affected area in Pushpavanam is a Guinness Record and provides coastal tree belt cover as protection against cyclones / floods.
